Guide

From tracing a name to writing it independently

Model → trace → fade → blank to reduce prompts step by step.

Overview

Children rarely jump from watching a model to writing a name cleanly on blank paper. Grid & Line tools support a gradual handoff: heavy guidance on name tracing, lighter guidance with a fading row, then independent rows on primary lined paper, with letter tracing for stubborn letters.

Each step uses the same primary guide lines (solid top, dashed midline, red baseline). Keep Letter size consistent across tools so muscle memory transfers.

Sessions of five to eight minutes daily work better than a single long page. Download a fresh PDF when the name spelling changes (nickname vs legal name).

Recommended practice steps

  1. Week 1 — full support: Name tracing → Dotted letters → Extra large → trace every row → Header Name only.
  2. Week 2 — fade: Same settings → Add a fading row on → child traces solid rows, then tries the fade row with decreasing help.
  3. Week 3 — blank name rows: Primary lined paper → match Letter size → Title “Write my name” → 3–5 blank rows; adult says letters aloud if needed.
  4. Week 4 — mixed: One name tracing sheet per week for review plus daily blank rows; spot-check capitals and letter order.
  5. Fix one letter: Letter tracing → single letter → Print → Dotted → one page → back to name tracing next day.

Recommended setups

  • Pre-K: Name tracing Extra large + fading row + Picture box for draw-then-write Friday.
  • Kindergarten: Medium name sheets Mon/Wed; Tue/Thu primary blank Medium; letter tracing only for problem letters.
  • Bilingual: Alternate English name tracing and Chinese characters on name tracing; blank practice on primary paper both scripts.

Printing and download notes

Print PDFs at Actual size or 100%. Reuse tracing pages in sheet protectors with dry-erase markers; print new blank primary pages when lines fill up.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I start?

Open name tracing, type the name, Tracing style Dotted letters, Letter size Extra large or Large, Add a fading row on.

When should I drop tracing?

When the child completes the fading row without peeking at the model—move to primary lined paper with the same Letter size for blank rows only.

What if one letter is always wrong?

Print one row from letter tracing for that letter (Print style), then return to name sheets.

Chinese names?

Name tracing draws guide characters on primary lines; use blank primary pages for cover-and-write after tracing rows.

Cursive names?

This path is for print/manuscript names. Joined signatures use cursive name with its own fading row.

Print scale?

Always Actual size / 100% so row height matches what you practiced on tracing sheets.
