How to make a multiplication chart

  1. Choose the size 10 × 10, 12 × 12 or 15 × 15.
  2. Choose the type Complete for reference, some answers missing for practice, or blank to fill in.
  3. Highlight squares Shade 1 × 1, 2 × 2, 3 × 3 … along the diagonal.
  4. Print Download the PDF; it fits on one page.

How to read the chart

Find one factor in the left column and the other in the top row; the answer is where the row and column meet. Because multiplication is commutative (3 × 7 = 7 × 3), the chart is symmetrical along the diagonal, which means there are really only about half as many facts to learn.

Patterns to look for

  • The 10s column ends in 0; the 5s column alternates 5 and 0.
  • The 9s: the digits of each answer add up to 9 (18, 27, 36…), and the tens digit goes up as the ones digit goes down.
  • The 2s, 4s and 8s double each other: 4 × 6 is double 2 × 6.
  • The highlighted diagonal holds the square numbers 1, 4, 9, 16, 25…

Learning the facts

Start with 2s, 5s and 10s, then 3s and 4s, then the rest. Use the blank chart as a weekly quiz: fill in as many squares as possible in five minutes and watch the number grow. Third-grade standards expect fluency with products up to 10 × 10.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is the best multiplication chart for kids?

A 12 × 12 chart is the most common, since many curricula teach facts up to 12. Use 10 × 10 for younger students.

How do I use a blank multiplication chart?

Fill in the answers from memory, row by row, then check against the completed chart.

What are square numbers on a multiplication chart?

Numbers multiplied by themselves (1, 4, 9, 16, 25…). They run diagonally from the top left to the bottom right.
