How to make triangle graph paper

  1. Pick the triangle size 1/4 inch, 1/2 inch, 5 mm, 1 cm or a custom side length.
  2. Style the page Paper size, orientation, line color and weight.
  3. Check the preview Rows of triangles with flat bases fill the page.
  4. Print or download Download the PDF or print at actual size.

Triangle paper vs isometric paper

Both are made of equilateral triangles. The difference is orientation: triangle paper has horizontal lines, so triangles sit on a flat base and point up or down. Isometric paper has vertical lines instead, which matches the vertical edges of 3D objects drawn in isometric view. For geometry and patterns, triangle paper is usually more natural; for 3D drawings, use isometric paper.

Ideas

  • Geometry: angles of 60° and 120°, area by counting triangles, trapezoids, rhombuses and regular hexagons built from six triangles.
  • Fractions: shading parts of hexagons made of triangles, as with pattern blocks.
  • Tessellations and quilting: designing triangle quilts and repeating patterns.
  • Games: triangle grids for puzzle and board game prototypes.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is triangle graph paper?

Paper covered in equilateral triangles formed by horizontal lines and lines at 60° and 120°.

Is triangle paper the same as isometric paper?

They use the same triangles, but triangle paper has horizontal lines while isometric paper has vertical lines.

What size triangles should I use?

1/4 inch or 5 mm for detailed patterns, 1/2 inch or 1 cm for children and classroom geometry.

What is triangle graph paper used for?

Geometry, tessellation and pattern design, quilting, and drawing 3D shapes in isometric-style views.

Can I print triangle paper on A4?

Yes. Pick A4 in the generator and print at Actual size; the triangle side length stays exactly as set.
