Overview
Dolch words are high-frequency English sight words grouped by reading level. Sight words embeds Pre-Primer, Primer, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 lists with Words slices of ten for manageable weekly sets.
Kindergarten usually mixes Pre-Primer and Primer; Grade 1 adds Grade 1 list chunks. Words absent from Dolch (theme units, names) belong in word tracing. Phonics-heavy CVC sets stay on CVC words—Dolch includes many irregular words CVC tools do not cover.
Track mastery with blank rows on sight words PDFs before moving to the next slice.
Recommended practice steps
- Pre-K: Pre-Primer Words 1–10 → Dotted → Extra large → read aloud while tracing.
- K mid-year: Pre-Primer remaining slices + Primer Words 1–10.
- Grade 1: Grade 1 list two slices per week + word tracing for spelling tests.
- Grade 2–3: Grade 2 then Grade 3 lists; Light gray tracing before blank rows.
- Phonics Friday: CVC short vowel page separate from Dolch—do not merge lists in one PDF.
